Full History of Summerseat Yet To Be Told...

Full History of Summerseat Yet To Be Told

by Guy Leonard, Staff Writer for County Times

For perhaps more thank 300 years Summerseat, a farm now nestled off of Route 235 in Mechanicsville, has seen St. Mary's County history come and go but the board of directors of the non-profit entity that now runs the land are trying equally hard to not only preserve it but to unmask its real story.

Announcements

Christmas in April Many thanks to the Christmas in April Community and Summerseat Farm volunteers for the rennovation and restoration of the Summerseat Office!

On November 2nd, 2014, a team of volunteers from Summerseat and Christmas in April completely painted the outside of the Office.

It looks great!  Jean Campbell, Dick Wildes, and Rich Fuller helped to paint the house, the ground, and themselves  while the Christmas in April folks did an exptraordinary job on the rest of the house.  We also had one community service worker that, while he was not and experienced painter, was a good worker.

Jean came in early and made coffee and brought snacks to keep us going and then at noon time provided us a great lunch of Chili and corn bread muffins.  We finished up around 1:30 or 2 and the place looks better than it has for years and years.

We'd like to offer our gratitude to all the folks that made this project a success.  Please come and see the newly restored Summerseat Farm Office the next time you are at the Farm!

For more information, please contact Mr. Rich Fuller at fullergnr@verizon.net.

Plant Sale Sponsors: Thank You!

Summerseat Farm, Inc. thanks the following sponsors of this year’s Annual Plant Sale held on May 10, 2014, at the farm.  It was a rousing success, and we could not be this successful without the support of these generous sponsors.  They are good neighbors and friends to Summerseat.  Please patronize them.

Animal Information

Summerseat has served as home to a countless number of farm animals to include horses, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, and even llamas!  Many of the current farm animals have come to Summerseat either by donation or as gifts. Birds of flight include geese, ducks, guinnea hens, doves, and a large variety of chickens.

Our wild residents (grazing the fenced in pastures) include American Buffalo and Barbados Sheep, giving Southern Maryland a variety of animals only seen at Summerseat!

At one time, Summerseat had considered serving as an Animal Sanctuary for the local community.  However, due to funding constraints, Summerseat is no longer able to care for wounded or sick animals.

The following resources are available for those interested in animal adoption resources or wild animal care:

  • The Animal Control Office: 301-475-8018
  • The Tri-County Animal Shelter: 301-932-1713
  • The St. Mary's Animal Welfare League: 301-373-5659
  • Department of Natural Resources (Wildlife) 1-877-463-6497
